Maria Crooks is a Cuban‑Jamaican‑Canadian emerging playwright who began writing in 2011. She has written three full‑length and two short one‑act plays most of which have been produced.
Maria's plays are often inspired by real events which she uses as a beginning point for her fictional work.
Maria has participated in several programs through the Alberta Playwrights' Network (APN) including the RBC Emerging Artists Mentorship Program and PlayWorks Ink and has taken a number of workshops with Caroline Russell-King playwright and dramaturg.
Her first play The Servant, received a nomination for a CAT Award for the 2014/2015 Theatre Season in the Best Original Script category.
Her play Selma Burke (co-written with Caroline Russell-King) was a finalist in the 2022 Sharon Pollock Playwriting Competition. The script was workshopped by Theatre Calgary in 2023 and scheduled to be produced in March 2024.
